The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) said on January 23rd that he had requested arrest warrants for two leading Afghan Taliban officials, over the persecution of women, The New Arab via Reuters reported.
In a statement, Karim Khan said he requested that judges okay warrants for the group’s supreme leader Hibatullah Akhunzada, and the head of Afghanistan’s Supreme Court, Abdul Hakim Haqqani, claiming that the men have committed crimes against humanity, with regards to female oppression.
Khan said: “These applications recognize that Afghan women and girls as well as the LGBTQI+ community are facing an unprecedented, unconscionable and ongoing persecution by the Taliban.”
