Syria’s foreign minister Asaad al-Shaibani, said on January 22nd that scrapping economic sanctions enforced during the leadership of president Bashar al-Assad was “key” to regaining stability in the battle-scarred country, The New Arab and agencies reported.

Syria’s new authorities have for weeks been trying to persuade the west to drop restrictions that were aimed at Assad’s administration, over the actions he took in 2011 against the anti-government protests, which prompted the civil war.

But the global community has been hesitant to relax the measures in place, as many countries including the US have said that they want to see how Syria’s new leaders operate before they do so.
