The army-aligned government of Sudan has issued new banknotes in the areas it runs, reportedly in a bid to weaken its paramilitary rivals- but it is prompting extensive queues at banks, hindering trade and creating division, according to the AL-Monitor via AFP on January 22nd.

In a country which is dealing with war and famine, the exchange supplanted 500 and 1,000 Sudanese pound banknotes, which have a value of around $0.25 and $0.50 respectively, with new ones in a total of seven states.

The government said this decision was essential to “protect the national economy and combat criminal counterfeiters.” But it is reportedly problematic decision for many Sudanese people.
