Man could be charged in Sweden over killing of Jordan pilot

Swedish prosecutors have requested the detention of Osama Krayem, a Swedish national, on suspicion of war crimes and terrorism, over the killing of a Jordanian air force pilot, The New Arab via Reuters reported on January 20th.
Krayem is accused of participating in the execution of the pilot Mouath al-Kasaesbeh, in Syria in 2014. Krayem was previously convicted for his involvement in the 2015 attacks in Paris and in Brussels in 2016.
In a statement, the Swedish Prosecution Authority said: “The man now requested for detention is suspected of having executed the pilot, together with other perpetrators belonging to IS.”

The Islamic State group captured al-Kasaesbeh in December 2014. The group later released a video showing him being burned alive in a cage, an act prosecutors described as a violation of the laws of war and an act of terrorism.
According to prosecutors, Krayem, 32, is alleged to have worked alongside others to force Kasaesbeh into the cage. Authorities noted that no one has yet stood trial for the killing of the pilot. Krayem’s Swedish lawyer has not immediately responded to a request for a comment on the case.
Sweden plan’s to request Krayem’s transfer from France, where he is currently imprisoned, should a trial proceed in Sweden. Swedish legislation permits courts to try individuals for crimes against international law committed in foreign countries.
Islamic State controlled large territories in Syria and Iraq, imposing its rule on millions of people between 2014 and 2017, before losing its last stronghold in Syria in 2019.
