Israeli strike in Syria kills two officials, one civilian

An Israeli air strike in Syria’s Quneitra region killed three people on January 15th, Arab News via AFP reported.

The casualties included two members of the Military Operations Department and a civilian, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Rami Abdel Rahman, who heads the Observatory, said, “This is the first Israeli strike targeting the security forces of the new authorities.”

A medical source reported that a local official from Ghadir Al-Bustan was among those killed. The Observatory said the attack took place as security forces conducted a sweep of civilian homes in the area to search for weapons.

Since islamist-led forces ousted Bashar al-Assad on December 8th, Israel has launched multiple air strikes on Syrian military targets, destroying much of the military’s arsenal, according to the Observatory. On the same day Assad was overthrown, Israel announced its troops had crossed the armistice line and had occupied the UN-monitored buffer zone in the Golan Heights, which has separated Israeli and Syrian forces since 1974.

Israel seized the majority of the Golan Heights from Syria in a 1967 war and later annexed the territory in a move largely unrecognised by the international community.
