Palestinians in Gaza celebrated news of the ceasefire between Hamas and Israel on January 15th, following 15 months of a brutal war on the strip.

The scenes in Gaza are filled with joy and celebration, as children danced and blew horns moments after hearing the news of the ceasefire agreement struck in Doha, Qatar, Reuters reported.

A Palestinian mother of five named Ghada told Reuters, “I am happy, yes, I am crying, but those are tears of joys.” Ghada, who is displaced from her home in Gaza City, also said “we are being reborn, with every hour of delay Israel conducted a new massacre, I hope it is all getting over now.” She spoke to Reuters via a chat app from a shelter in the neighbourhood of Deir Al-Balah.

Ahmad Dahman, 25, who is displaced from Gaza City and lives in Deir Al-Balah said the first thing he will do when the ceasefire is effective is to recover the body of his father who was killed in an Israeli airstrike on his family’s home last year, and “give him a proper burial.”

Iman Al-Qouqa, who lives in a tent with her family, said: “This is a day of happiness, and sadness, a shock and joy, but certainly it is a day we all must cry and cry long because of what we all lost. We did not lose friends, relatives, and homes only, we lost our city, Israel sent us back in history because of its brutal war.”
