The United Nations human rights chief on January 15th urged for western sanctions enforced on Syria over its civil war to be lifted, now that Bashar al-Assad has been removed from power and is exiled, The New Arab and agencies reported.

During his visit to Syria, Volker Türk, also pushed for transitional justice for victims, stressing that it boosts the public’s faith in state institutions and as the country is ruled by its new leaders.

Türk said that “revenge and vengeance are never the answer,” a month since the Assad-led regime drew to a close and rebel groups captured Damascus.
