Pro-Israel judge to replace Lebanon’s Nawaf Salam as ICJ president

Ugandan judge, Julia Sebutinde, who defended Israel against accusations of genocide in Gaza is set to assume the role of president for the International Court of Justice (ICJ), after the previous head Nawaf Salam was selected as Lebanon’s new Prime Minister on January 13th.

Sebutinde has expressed strong opposition to South Africa’s genocide accusations against Israel and is expected to replace Salam after his resignation, the The New Arab and agencies reported on January 15th. Reuters reported on January 14th that Salam had resigned as a member of the ICJ.

The judge also said that under the terms of the Genocide Convention, South Africa had not managed to show genocidal intentions on Israel’s part.

Salam was appointed by Lebanon’s president Joseph Aoun to create a government which strives to save the country from its economic challenges.
