Syria’s interim government picks new army chief

General Ali Nour al-Din al-Naasan has been appointed as the Syrian army’s new chief of staff , following the latest cabinet reshuffle of Ahmad Al-Sharaa’s interim government, The New Arab reported on January 10th.

The appointment follows the newly established Syrian government as part of a wider effort to rebuild the country’s armed forces after the removal of the Assad regime in December 2024.

Al-Naasan has led numerous battles against the Assad regime in Northern Syria and is a key military figure who will be at the forefront of the Syrian army, sources confirmed to Al Jazeera.

The newly appointed chief of staff previously attained the rank of major general of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, the Sunni islamist militant group, reports The New Arab. 

Al-Naasan plays a key role in rebuilding Syria’s fractured military forces following the collapse of the Assad regime, and is now leading efforts to restore the Syrian army and to unify differing opposition factions under a national framework. His strategies involve reordering the military’s priorities to better align with both regional geopolitical dynamics and local realities.

During his military career, Al-Naasan also implemented training programmes intended to prepare officers and enlisted personnel for modern warfare and crisis management.

Furthermore, he oversaw the integration of new weaponry and advanced technologies in training and operational procedures.

Al-Naasan’s appointment comes just weeks after the naming of Major General Murhaf Abu Qasra as Minister of Defence.
