Lebanon’s President, Joseph Aoun selected Nawaf Salam, who is the presiding judge at the International Court of Justice in The Hague as the country’s prime minister on January 13th after having consultations with lawmakers, The New Arab and agencies reported.

Salam, who is Harvard-educated, was backed by 68 of the lawmakers by the afternoon of January 13th. Those who voted for him include the Kataeb and Free Patriotic Movement parties.

The interim Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, had reportedly only got nine votes by January 13th. Hezbollah had wanted Mikati to maintain his role.

The first session of talks ended not long before midday on January 13th, and resulted in 12 independent lawmakers backing Salam, seven choosing Mikati and two others not picking either of them.
