Body of Bedouin hostage found in Gaza

The IDF has recovered the body of Youssef Ziyadne, an Arab Bedouin citizen of Israel, from a tunnel near Gaza’s southern city of Rafah, The New Arab and agencies reported on January 8th. Youssef was taken captive by Hamas fighters on October 7th 2023.

On January 10th, Israel reportedly confirmed that the body of Hamza Ziyadne, the son of Youssef Ziyadne, was also found in Gaza.

As Israel’s bombardment of Gaza continues, it is unclear whether the hostages were killed as a result of Israeli airstrikes or by Hamas fighters.

IDF international spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Nadav Shoshani, said that the captive’s death did not appear to be recent.

Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported that the Israeli military suspected Youssef may have been killed in one of their airstrikes, considering that the bodies of Palestinian militants were found near his body.

Hamas’ armed wing told Qatar’s Al- Jazeera that most of the hostages have now been declared missing as a result of Israel’s continued airstrikes in the region.

Ziyadne’s two other children, who were abducted with him on October 7th 2023, were released as part of a prisoner exchange deal in November 2023.

The recovery of Youssef Ziyadne’s body took place amidst talks in Doha to end Israel’s war on Gaza.
