General Ali Nour al-Din al-Naasan has been appointed as the new chief of staff for the Syrian army, after a recent cabinet reshuffle of  Ahmed Al-Sharaa’s caretaker government, The New Arab reported on January 10th.

The appointment came as part of a wider initiative by Syria’s recently established government to reconstruct the country’s armed forces, since the fall of Bashar al-Assad last month.

Al-Naasan, who has led several major battles against northern Syria’s regime, will be in the leading position of the country’s army, sources confirmed to Al Jazeera.

Al-Naasan was previously part of  Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and progressed through its ranks, achieving the rank of Major General last month, after a number of military reforms were introduced by the caretaker government.
