Syrian justice minister’s appearance in execution video prompt calls for removal

Syrian rights groups and activists have urged that the new justice minister should be sacked or investigated after old footage remerged which showed him overseeing the executions of two women accused of prostitution.
One of the videos showed armed men asking a veiled woman facing prostitution allegations to kneel down on the street before shooting her dead, the Arab Weekly reported on January 9th.
A man who appears to be the interim justice minister, Shadi al-Waisi, talks to her and then records the execution on his phone.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which documented the executions, established that the man is Shadi al-Waisi.
Women’s rights activist, Rowaida Youssef Kanaan, said in a Facebook post: “What is currently required: dismissing the minister of justice, Shadi al-Waisi, because he is a disaster for the future of Syria.”
