Saudi project clears 570 landmines in Yemen

Saudi Arabian Project Masam has aided the removal of 570 Houthi explosive devices from regions of Yemen. The explosive devices were comprised of 2 anti-personnel mines, 50 anti-tank mines, 508 unexploded ordnances and 10 explosive devices, according to a recent report from Arab News, on December 22,2024.

The operations took place in Marib, Aden, Jouf, Shabwa, Taiz, Hodeidah, Lahij, Sanaa, Al-Bayda, Al-Dhale and Saada. This is in response to the displacement of Around 5 million Yemeni people due to the presence of  these land mines.

Ousama Al-Gosaibi, Masam`s managing director, stated a total of 473,258 mines have been cleared since the initiative was founded in 2018.

The explosives were planted indiscriminately throughout the region, posing a threat to civilians lives.

The initiative is tasked with the training of  demining engineers, providing them with modern equipment. It also supports any Yemenis injured by the explosive devices.

Teams then efficiently clear villages, roads and schools, allowing  for safe movement and the delivery of humanitarian aid to Yemen.
