Israeli defence minister tells troops to spend winter inside Syria

Israel’s defence minister Israel Katz has ordered Israeli troops to spend winter on Mount Hermon, a strategic location inside Syria overlooking Damascus, according to Reuters on December 13th.

“Due to what is happening in Syria – there is enormous security importance to our holding on to the peak of Mount Hermon,” a statement from Katz’s office said on December 13th. This suggests that Israeli troops who invaded Syrian territory after the toppling of Bashar al-Assad’s government are likely to remain permanently.

Israel’s prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on December 12th that the troops would remain until there was an effective force in place to enforce the separation of forces agreement signed in 1974 following the October war the year before.
