Iraqi militias enter Syria to support government

Iraqi militias, affiliated with Iran, entered Syria overnight to support Syria’s army battling the group Tahrir al-Sham, two Syrian army sources said according to the Arab News via Reuters.
A senior Syrian army source told Reuters that Hashd al-Shaabi fighters from Iraq also crossed into Syria through a military route near Al Bukamal crossing.
“These are fresh reinforcements being sent to aid our comrades on the front lines in the north,” the officer said, adding the militias included Iraq’s Katiab Hezbollah and Fatemiyoun groups.
In recent days, the Tahrir al-Sham group took over Syria’s second largest city, Aleppo, following a shock offensive. Tahrir al-Sham is an armed political alliance headed by Al-Qaeda’s former branch in Syria, who were then known as Al-Nusra.
