New Hezbollah leader open to ceasefire with Israel

Hezbollah’s new leader Naim Qassem has said the group could agree to a ceasefire under certain terms, according to the Arab News via AFP.

His statement came as Israel’s security cabinet met to discuss a potential truce, but also as Israel attacked the city of Baalbek in the east of Lebanon.

In his first speech since becoming leader Qassem said he would follow Nasrallah’s “work program” and that Hezbollah would continue to resist Israel’s attacks on Lebanon, but he also left the door open for a truce, stating “if the Israelis decide that they want to stop the aggression, we say we accept, but under the conditions that we see as appropriate and suitable.”

He added though that Hezbollah would not “beg for a ceasefire,” and warned it was yet to receive a credible proposition.
