Hezbollah elects Naim Qassem to succeed slain leader Nasrallah

Hezbollah announced on October 29th that they had elected deputy head Naim Qassem to succeed Hassan Nasrallah, who was killed last month, according to the Arab News via Reuters.

The group said in a statement that its Shura Council had elected Qassem in accordance with its established process for appointing a secretary general.

Qassem has long been one of Hezbollah’s leading spokesmen, and has given three televised addresses since Nasrallah’s death, including one on October 8th in which he said the group backed efforts to reach a ceasefire in Lebanon.
