Netanyahu says Israel will not leave Gaza border corridor

As reported by Reuters via Arab News , Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated on September 4th that Israel would only agree to a permanent ceasefire in Gaza if it ensured the border area between southern Gaza and Egypt could never be used as a supply route for Hamas.

Netanyahu reiterated his firm opposition to withdrawing from the Philadelphi corridor, located along Gaza’s southern border with Egypt, during the initial 42-day phase of a proposed agreement.

For a permanent ceasefire to follow, Israel would require guarantees that any future administration of Gaza would effectively prevent the corridor from being used for smuggling weapons or supplies to Hamas.
