Ben-Gvir urges for the execution of Palestinian prisoners

Israeli Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben-Gvir called for the execution of Palestinians currently held in Israeli jails by being “shot to the head” on June 30th, according to Asharq Al-Awsat.
Ben-Gvir urged his colleagues in the Israeli Knesset to pass a bill that would allow for the execution of prisoners. The minister promised that a subsistence level of food would be provided for the detained to keep prisoners alive till the law was enacted. The preliminary reading of the bill was approved by the Knesset’s General Assembly in early March 2023.
Those death penalty would be given to those “committing a murder offence motivated by racism and intending to harm the State of Israel”. The bill, proposed by the right wing Otzma Yehudit Party, requires two more readings in the Knesset before being fully approved.

The comments attracted criticism from human rights organisations and government officials. German Deputy Foreign Ministry spokesman, Christian Wagner stated that the German government condemned the remarks which it found to be “disgusting”.
Abdullah Al-Zaghari, the head of the Prisoners’ Club, commented that the “statements of fascist and extremist Minister Ben Gvir represent a system that practices genocide against the Palestinian people, and only speaks in the language of killing and fighting any Palestinian presence in any form.”.
Al-Zaghari noted that Ben-Gvir’s remarks went beyond the stage of threat, citing that the prison administration which lies within the security minister’s remit had already executed detainees.
The Palestinian Prisoners Association stated that Israel holds more than 9,450 prisoners from the West Bank since the 7th of October. There are suspected to be thousands more that have “forcibly disappeared” in Gaza however Israeli authorities have refused to disclose how many Palestinians it is holding from the enclave. The scale of arrests has led to many Israeli jails to be overcrowded according to the New Arab.
