US seeks UN support of Biden ceasefire proposal
The US said on June 3rd it wants the UN Security Council to adopt a resolution backing the outlined proposal by President Joe Biden to end the war on the Gaza Strip, The New Arab and agencies reported.
It circulated a one-page draft text to the 15-member council — though a resolution needs at least nine votes in favour to pass, as well as no vetoes by the US, France, Britain, China or Russia. Hamas already publicly expressed their positive feelings towards the proposal, which aligns with previous proposals of their own.
The draft calls on Hamas to accept the deal and “fully and implement its terms without delay and without condition” and “stresses the importance of the parties adhering to the terms of the deal once agreed, with the aim of bringing about a permanent cessation of hostilities.” Hamas has been clear about its key demands that allow for its cooperation in negotiating a ceasefire deal.
