Fresh from criticising Israel in a Sunday Times column, Britain’s Foreign Secretary warned his Iranian counterpart on April 11 against a retaliation against Israel after they struck the Iranian embassy in Damascus, Sky News reported.

Lord David Cameron wrote a column on April 7, affirming that Britain’s support for Israel was “not unconditional” and said that he had become more critical of the state in recent months.

He also renewed his pleas to the Israeli authorities, urging them to allow more humanitarian aid into the war-torn Gaza Strip.

Fearing a full-blown regional conflict, Cameron wrote on X, formerly Twitter, “Today I made clear to Foreign Minister (Hossein) Amir-Abdollahian that Iran must not draw the Middle East into a wider conflict. I am deeply concerned about the potential for miscalculation leading to further violence. Iran should instead work to de-escalate and prevent further attacks.”

Israel is now on red alert, calling up numerous reservists and the military has announced that leave had been suspended for all combat units.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the embassy strike and noted that such an incident risks causing an uptick in tensions in an “already volatile region”.
