Israel continues to prepare for war with Lebanon

Israel’s Defence Minister Yoav Gallant warned on January 18 that the country needed to prepare for war with Lebanon amidst several recent breaches at the border, according to LBCI Lebanon.

Despite Israel’s previous threats towards Lebanon and its militants Hezbollah, Gallant insists that they want to resolve the conflict in a peaceful manner via a political agreement which would also allow the displaced, approximately 75,000 people according to recent UN data, to return.

The political agreement in question would be expected to be akin to UN Resolution 1701, an agreement that was unanimously agreed by Security Council members back in August 2006 and helped towards putting a halt to the bloody one-month war between Hezbollah and Israel.

There are fears that the skirmishes between both parties could spiral into a full-blown war like the one just short of two decades ago.

Israel’s attacks have been intensifying and air surveillance is ever present given the high usage of military drones.

Concerned residents of Lebanon’s southern region have noted the increase of drones in the area. The majority of militant fighters killed in the conflict were targeted in drone attacks.

For the first time since the cross-border fighting which began in October, Israel carried out an assault on the southern Lebanese town of Kawkaba on January 18. In recent times, the Israeli army claimed to have infiltrated the village of Al-Shaab to clear mines.

Hezbollah and The UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) claimed shortly after the IDF statement that no such infiltration had taken place.

The Israeli army also said its jets struck Hezbollah “terrorist infrastructure” in the town of Adeisseh, that is often subject to Israel’s heavy blows.
