US vetos UN resolution calling for ceasefire in Gaza

The United States stood as the sole country to veto a UN resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
Despite 13 members of the 15-member Security Council voting in favor of the resolution, the US cast a dissenting vote, while the United Kingdom chose to abstain.
Secretary-General Antonio Guterres invoked Article 99 for the first time since 1971, which empowers a U.N. chief to address perceived threats to international peace and security.
Guterres cautioned about a potential “human catastrophe” in Gaza and implored the council to call for a humanitarian cease-fire.
