US has not given firm deadline for Israel to end Gaza war

Gaza Bombings

On December 7th, John Finer, a national security aide at the White House, affirmed that the United States has not set a definite deadline for Israel to conclude its military operations against Hamas. Additionally, he expressed concern that if the conflict were to end at this point, the militant group could still pose a threat.

Finer told the Aspen Security Form in Washington that, “we have not given a firm deadline to Israel, not really our role. This is their conflict. That said, we do have influence, even if we don’t have ultimate control over what happens on the ground in Gaza.”

The United States echoed Israeli assessments, suggesting that there are more “legitimate military targets” in Southern Gaza. These targets include “much if not most” of the Hamas leadership. However, Finer acknowledged that certain aspects of Israel’s operations in northern Gaza have not demonstrated “sufficient care” for civilian lives.

He also added that there have been ongoing conversations between President Biden and Prime Minister Netanyahu about “how the conflict is being conducted in all parts of Gaza”.

From this ongoing war, Israel has two objectives, Finer stated, to remove Hamas’ governance over Gaza and that it no longer poses a threat against Israel.

However, Israel has waged an unparalleled war on Gaza, resulting in the deaths of over 17,000 individuals, predominantly civilians. This has led to most of the population in Gaza being displaced and forced out of their homes.

Numerous voices have advocated for the prosecution of Israeli officials on charges of war crimes, including genocide. Moreover, Israeli officials have explicitly called for the forced displacement of Palestinians and the obliteration of Gaza.

Following the end of the temporary truce between Israel and Hamas on Dec.1st , Israel has intensified its airstrikes in southern Gaza.  Leading to the displacement of Gazans from their homeland.
