Top EU diplomat calls for an end to West Bank attacks

On October 31, the EU’s top diplomat called for an end to attacks on Palestinians in the West Bank by the Israeli settlers, according to The Times of India.

Spaniard Josep Borell, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, recently spoke to Foreign Ministers from Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt.

Following Borell’s talks, his office released a statement noting that the diplomat had “expressed great concern over attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinians, which he firmly confirmed.”.

The envoy also spoke to US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken on November 2. During his conversation with the American official, Borell called for a ceasefire between Israel and Palestine amidst escalation of tensions.

After holding talks with Blinken, Borell wrote on X (previously Twitter), “Discussed developments in the Middle East with US Secretary of State Blinken today (November 2), ahead of his trip to the region, including the need for more humanitarian access and pauses, to work together and with regional partners to prevent escalation, protect civilians and move towards a 2-state solution. “.

The European Union also stressed the necessity for a ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian militant group Hamas and has demanded that the group releases the hostages who were abducted during October 7’s brutalities.

It has been reported that 122 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank as well as around 9,200 in the under-siege territory of Gaza since the beginning of October.

The West Bank has been occupied by Israel since 1967, the year of the Arab-Israeli war.

Ursula Von der Leyen, the President of the EU Commission, sparked controversy last month for saying that the European Union stands with Israel.

Her remarks angered a sizeable number of MEPs, most notably Irish Representative Clare Daly.
