Disgraced former Mexican diplomat arrested in Israel

A former Mexican diplomat has been arrested in Israel over alleged sex crimes, according to The Washington Post, October 2.
Author and ex-diplomat, Andres Roemer faces multiple accusations of sexual assault as the Mexican President, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador confirmed that he had been arrested in the Middle Eastern country on October 2.
He had previously served as consul general to San Francisco from 2013 to 2016 in addition to being Mexico’s United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) ambassador in 2016.
The specialised agency of the world body aims to global peace and security through international cooperation in arts, culture, education and sciences.
The intellectual has been a wanted man in Mexico for several years and the Mexican President confirmed that Roemer, who has been living in Israel for a lengthy period of time, will be extradited to his country of birth.
There are currently no details as to when Roemer, 60, will arrive in Mexico. The Central American country requested his extradition back in 2022.
Mr. Roemer has been accused of sexually abusing eight women as accusations poured in from the MeToo movement.
The movement originally gained publicity when the now convicted sexual predator, Harvey Weinstein received numerous complains of inappropriate conduct against him. The film producer was incarcerated in 2018 and since then, MeToo has stood in solidarity with those who are victims of sexual misconduct as well as raising awareness on the traumatic effects that those who have been sexually assaulted endure following the abuse.
